1. Use JPG for many photographs

JPG is commonly useful for photos because lossy compression can make photographic images relatively small. Re-saving at lower quality can introduce additional artifacts.

2. Use PNG for sharp graphics and transparency

PNG is lossless and can preserve transparent pixels, making it useful for logos, icons, screenshots and diagrams. A PNG photograph may be much larger than a comparable JPG.

3. Know what conversion does not do

Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore detail lost in the original JPG, and it does not create transparency that was not present. It can actually increase file size.

4. Check the destination requirements

Use the format accepted by the site, form or application where you plan to upload the image. Keep the original when quality or transparency matters.

Important to remember

Choose the format for the content and destination rather than assuming one format is always better. Compare file size and appearance after conversion.
